Department Overview

This department specializes in outpatient nutrition counseling on pediatric nutrition issues. They also provide inpatient assessments and education as well as some on-going support with outpatient follow-up.


Position Summary

The Lead Dietetic Technician coordinates the work of the Dietetic Technician and assumes the responsibility for the nutritional well-being of patients receiving sustenance provided by the department of Nutrition Services. This includes direct tray service, foods stocked on the patient unit, and all enteral formulas. Responsibilities include: monitoring computer messages and processing orders, completing nutrition screenings and assessments, taking Room Service calls and processing orders, menu correction, calorie count calculations, establishing nourishments as needed, calculation and preparation of enteral formulas, provides nutrition education as appropriate, maintains high level of patient satisfaction and quality assurance and participates in related patient care activities.

Education:
*High School diploma or equivalent required

Experience:
*Dietary Aid experience or a student in a current dietetic program
*Experience in a pediatric setting preferred
*Informal leadership experience preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
*Knowledge of food composition
*Knowledge of menu planning and safe food handling
*Analytical ability to assess patient for potential nutritional risk
*Able to calculate nutrient intake and recipes
*Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, physicians and other health-care professionals an provide nutritional instruction
*Exhibits communication skills necessary to interpret age-specific responses to assessment, treatment and interactions with others
*Able to trouble-shoot issues, make independent decisions and escalate concerns to leader
*Communicates well both written and orally
*Able to coordinate the work of others
*Knowledge of adult training techniques
